The most obnoxious, controversial, and savage moments on Koffee with Karan: List hai toh hit hai - episode 78
Karan Johar’s iconic talk show Koffee with Karan is back with an extra dose of gossip, entertainment and a string of controversies. The show which has featured some of the biggest stars in Bollywood and even got them to reveal some of their deep and dirty secrets, has been one of the most popular talk shows ever since its first season back in 2004. And as the filmmaker returns with the seventh edition of the show, we revisit some of the most obnoxious, controversial, and savage clapbacks made by celebrities on the Koffee couch.
When Kangana dropped the N bomb
The whole nepotism debate in Bollywood was ignited by Kangana Ranaut when she passed an unsavoury comment on Johar in the fifth season of his chat show. The actress called Johar “the stereotypical Bollywood biggie who is snooty”, “ the flag bearer of nepotism”, and “the movie mafia”, when she made an appearance on the show along with Saif Ali Khan. The remark didn’t go well with Johar, who later said that while Kangana deserved all the National Awards but accused her of playing the victim card. Their jabs at each other blew up into a major controversy that made it to primetime news debates. Now we’re not taking sides here, but we’re always up for a nasty Bollywood battle on national TV!
When Hardik Pandya spoke about losing his virginity
Cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul were trolled heavily for their misogynistic and sexist remarks in the sixth season of the show. In fact, the backlash of their comments actually got the two players suspended by the BCCI for a couple of weeks. Their controversial statements revolved around relationships, women and sex. Pandya was particularly targetted for taking a rather casual tone in describing his sexual escapades and describing how he told his parents about losing his virginity. Slammed by fans and social commentators, the ramifications of their poor choice of words actually forced Hotstar to take down the particular episode. We all complain that cricketers lead an insular life and rarely reveal much about their stance on various issues. But going by Pandya’s unfiltered take on his life of debauchery, we’ll have to agree that sometimes ‘no comment’ is the best comment.
When Sonam Kapoor defined what constitutes a good actor
Sonam Kapoor has often made headlines for the wrong reasons. When she graced the couch along with her father, Anil Kapoor, back in 2014, she pulled a faux pas that had us in splits for some time. When Johar asked if it bothered her to be known for her fashion sense more than her acting skills, the actress responded by making an outlandish claim that people consider someone a good actor if they are not good-looking. The petite actress said, “Just because you look ordinary and you talk loud doesn’t mean you’re a good actor.” We’ll have to agree with her here. In Sonam’s world, words speak louder than actions after all.
When Salman Khan admitted to being a virgin
Salman Khan kicked up a storm and cracked us up when he confessed to being a virgin in the fourth season of the show. When Johar asked Khan about his carnal life, the superstar replied saying that he has had friends but not with benefits. Khan stood by his statement when he was asked the same question in the fifth season where he made an appearance along with brothers and actors Arbaaz and Sohail Khan. Now, if Salman is a virgin, we’re all allowed to claim to be the Queen of England.
When Alia Bhatt revealed her poor general knowledge
Alia Bhatt became the butt of trolls and memes alike following her debut appearance on Koffee with Karan along with Student of The Year co-stars Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra. During the buzzer round, the trio was asked to name the president of India. Bhatt quickly replied, Prithiviraj Chauhan. By the time she realised her mistake, the damage was done. To give Alia some credit, Varun actually responded to the same question with ‘Manmohan Singh’.
Let’s be realistic, tinseltown folk can’t be expected to keep up with current affairs. That’s like expecting our politicians to be tuned into the state of the economy. Okay this analogy is being retracted for quality purposes.
When Ranveer Singh irked Anushka Sharma
This one may not surprise many. After all Ranveer Singh’s famously outlandish statements have only matched his fashion sense and have often bordered on the bizarre. In his very first appearance on Koffee With Karan, along with Anushka Sharma, the actor told Sharma that if she ever wanted her butt pinched, he would be willing to oblige. The actress who shared the screen with Singh in his debut feature Band Baaja Baaraat was visibly shocked and playfully smacked the actor, warning him to not talk to her like that. But the motormouth actor didn’t just stop there. Later on the show, he also described a fond childhood memory of watching Kareena Kapoor swim, an event that admittedly helped him grow up instantly. Now let’s get real, hitting someone when they’re down amounts to punching down. But when it comes to pinching, the rules are debatable.
SRK’s sassy reply to KJO
Bollywood’s King Khan is famous for his versatility, undeniable charm and wicked sense of humor. In fact, his sharp clapbacks in many interviews have been rather savage. So it didn’t come as a surprise when SRK outwit Karan Johar in the rapid-fire round of the show. When Johar quizzed Khan about what he would do if he woke up and found out that he had turned into Karan Johar, Khan hit it out of the park. Khan responded saying that going by the tabloids, the chances of him waking up next to Karan Johar were more likely. SRK’s witty comeback even had Johar in splits. And who said strange bedfellows can’t crack the formula for blockbusters?
