List hai toh hit hai - Best of Tom Cruise films - Episode 68

Tom Cruise will probably go down in history as one of Hollywood's greatest stars. He has consistently released commercial blockbusters for nearly 30 years, and his latest film Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the 1986 cult classic Top Gun, is expected to break several box-office records. So for today’s list we have curated six must-watch Tom Cruise films available on OTT.

1. The Last Samurai (Netflix)

Set in 19th century Japan in the midst of an ever-changing socio-political landscape in the country, the story follows an American military captain, Nathan Algren, of the 7th Cavalry Regiment. Traumatised by the war against the Native Americans and some of the cruelty dealt by his own regiment forces him to move to Japan to regain inner peace in his life. He is hired by a local businessman to train the Imperial Japanese Army in modern warfare, who has a vested interest in grabbing political leverage in Japan. Algren soon finds himself in the crosshairs of the legendary Samurai warriors who have their own agenda. Directed by Edward Zwick and with Tom Cruise, in the lead, the film carefully navigates through several themes including grief, trauma, redemption, and imperialism. Ken Watanabe and Timothy Spall essay important supporting roles.

2. The Firm (Prime Video)

Based on John Grisham’s novel of the same name, The Firm is a mystery thriller about a young ambitious lawyer who finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy at his new law firm. Tom Cruise essays the role of Mitch McDeere who must find safe haven before the forces conspiring against him gain an upper hand. The film also features a star-studded ensemble of Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, and Jeanne Tripplehorn. It is also a faithful adaptation of the novel and is directed by Academy Award-winning director Sydney Pollack

3. Interview with the Vampire (YouTube, Google Play, Amazon, and Hungama Play)

Long before the Twilight franchise put a blemish on vampire stories, there were riveting tales of vampires adapted with great authenticity. Interview with the Vampire, released in 1994, is based on a novel by Anne Rice published in 1976 and it tells an unconventional tale of a vampire named Louis narrating his tragic life over centuries to a reporter in the present day. Brad Pitt plays the role of Louis while Tom Cruise essays the more complex role of Lestat. A young Kirsten Dunst, Stephen Rea, Christian Slater, and Antonio Banderas play supporting roles, and the film is directed by Neil Jordan.

4. Edge of Tomorrow (Netflix, Prime Video)

One of the most underrated films of the 21st century is the 2014 sci-fi action film, Edge of Tomorrow. The film underwhelmed at the box office despite its stellar cast, great story, and fast-paced narrative. Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt excel in their roles as the lead characters with thoroughly fleshed out character arcs. Cruise essays the role of Major William Cage, who is charged for being a deserter, while Blunt essays the role of the legendary soldier popularly known as the Angel of Verdun. Directed by Doug Liman, the story revolves around an alien invasion and humanity’s last-ditch effort to save themselves from extinction.

5. Collateral (Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and YouTube)

Released in 2004 to critical acclaim, Collateral, is a crime thriller starring Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Mark Ruffalo. Directed by Michael Mann, the film revolves around a cab driver who is taken hostage and forced to do the bidding of an unempathetic and cold hitman. Tom Cruise plays the antagonist as the villainous killer, while Jamie Foxx plays the role of the innocent cab driver desperately trying to free himself from his dangerous predicament.

6. Eyes Wide Shut (Apple TV)

The final film on this list is possibly one of the most underrated Tom Cruise films, the 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut. Directed by one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, Stanley Kubrick, the film is an erotic psychological mystery drama that follows Dr Bill Hartford and his journey into the underground world of secret sex clubs. He soon discovers that he could be involved in much more than he bargained for as things quickly spiral out of control. Tom Cruise plays the role of Bill while Nicole Kidman plays the role of his wife Alice. The film was Kubrick’s final film as he tragically passed away shortly after the film’s production. It remains one of the most critically analysed films, rich in visual imagery and symbolism.
