Ray Charles is widely regarded as one of the greatest American musicians of all time. Despite losing his eyesight at a young age, he would go on to influence music, culture, and society. He was also pivotal in aiding the black community in America at a time when race relations in the country were in a delicate balance. Jamie Foxx’s Oscar-winning role as Ray Charles is one of the best of his career, and the film was nominated for six Oscars, winning two. 

Walk the Line - YouTube, Google Play, Apple TV

Elvis is regarded as the King of Rock N’ Roll, and not many American musicians have even dared to usurp the king from his throne. But if ever there was anyone who could, it was Johnny Cash. Walk the Line is a poignant film directed by James Mangold that chronicles the ups and downs of the legendary singer. The excellent Joaquin Phoenix delivers a scintillating performance as Cash, which earned him an Academy Award nomination. Whereas Reese Witherspoon’s portrayal of the five-time Grammy award-winning, June Carter, earned her an Oscar for Best Actress in a leading role.

The story focuses on the volatile tale of 90s hip-hop stars Christopher ‘Biggie’ Wallace and Tupac Shakur. The intense rivalry and their respective murders is one of the most shocking stories from that era. The film is narrated from Biggie’s perspective, and covers the events leading up to his murder, shortly after Tupac was murdered. Even after more than quarter of a century both their murders remain unsolved.

    

Love & Mercy - Jiocinema, VI Movies

The Beach Boys redefined the rock genre, and were one of the most influential rock bands from the 60s. Love and Mercy focuses on lead singer Brian Wilson’s mental health issues and the controversial and unethical treatment under Dr Eugene Landy’s 24-hour therapy program. The film jumps between the 60s and 80s and it focuses on the struggles Wilson faced under the control of Dr Landy. Brian Wilson from the 60s is played by John Cusack and the 80s  version is essayed by Paul Dano. 

Shine - Disney+ Hotstar

Geoffrey Rush’s Academy Award-winning performance is a nuanced story of Australian pianist David Helfgott. Rush is part of an elite list of actors who have won the Triple Crown of Acting, winners of the Tony Award for theatre, Primetime Emmy Award for television, and an Academy Award for the film. The film puts emphasis on the mental health struggles faced by Helfgott. The film received rave reviews upon release and is widely regarded as one of the finest Australian productions. 

The Dirt - Netflix

The Mötley Crüe is one of the most iconic rock bands from America. The film is based on the autobiography of the band and might not be the most critically acclaimed as some of the other titles on this list. However, the unfiltered look into the band’s rise to international fame, with a touch of humor, makes it an entertaining watch.
